What is the best type of wood to carve?

Every carver has their preference of wood. Basswood, Cottonwood Bark, Butternut, Tupelo, are commonly used, and that only covers a few. Just about any wood can be carved. Harder woods such as Tupelo, may be easier to carve using power carving tools.

Is wood carving dangerous?

Wood carving requires very sharp tools. Safety gear is highly recommended for protection. We recommend that you always have and use appropriate protective equipment.

Does the club supply tools?

All carvers bring their own tools and supplies. We offer a limited inventory of different woods, which are available for purchase to club members. We also have a small library of books and publications available to members to check out for 2 weeks at a time.

May I donate tools or other supplies to the club?

Yes. You may donate tools or other items to the Space Coast Wood Carving Club. Your donations help us promote wood carving among young people, veterans, seniors, and everybody else to strengthen the community. To make a donation, just use the Contact page.

I have issues with my hands and cannot grip a carving knife, are there other options for me available?

Yes! Many people choose to "Power Carve." This generally involves a rotary tool and doesn't require the hand strength that using a knife might. The tools are small, portable and have a very familiar sound...think of a "Dental Office...without the all the hollering." We also have members who do wood burning art, also known as "pyrography." This can be used alone or incorporated into a carving project and it makes beautiful work!

Is the earth flat?

Well, Id say ask Bertie, but he's not here. He's a flat earther, who got mad when we insisted earth was round. He stormed off, saying he'd walk to the edge of the earth to prove us wrong.

We're not too worried...He'll come around.
